Media: Azure The Living Room is an informal space for conversation, creativity, and rest. The project is the final stop on a three-year journey to build an all-ages, flexible programming space designed to foster connectivity and meet the changing needs of Burlingtonians.&nbsp; Co-curated by Suzanne Carte and Jasmine Mander, the “living” series opened its doors in 2023 with the Living Library, a year-long initiative with rotating and overlapping artists’ and authors’ projects, which provided free and equitable access to events, a makerspace, books, and room to sprawl. Like a library, it encouraged the exchange of a broad range of human knowledge, experience, traditions, and ideas in a welcoming and supportive environment. It promoted the sharing of resources and stories through resting, writing, reading, listening, and looking.    This fluid, social space is ideal for co-authored workshops and discussions. It is an informal space for gathering with an emphasis on flexibility and adaptability. Multiple modular units such as tables, seats, containers, curtains, and a cart are available for hosts, participants, and guests alike to shape and form the room to optimize their needs to&nbsp;relax, make, and learn together. The Living Room is part of the AGB’s special community-arts project series geared to stimulate more opportunities for artists and audiences across the Greater Halton/Hamilton district. Our engagement began with a deep listening process, centred on understanding the needs of the diverse organizations coming together within the hub. From this foundation, we designed and coordinated the renovation of the ground floor, including a community kitchen and an informal gallery supported by a modular wall system—spaces intended to foster gathering, visibility, and everyday use. Throughout the project, we approached design as an act of care. We believe that spaces serving vulnerable communities should be generous, playful, and unapologetically welcoming—using colour, flexibility, and moments of delight to affirm dignity, reduce barriers, and support joy alongside function. These principles informed material choices, spatial organization, and the character of shared spaces across the building. The work then extended to the second and third floors, where we reimagined office layouts and communal areas to better support the rhythms and realities of daily work. The third floor is currently under construction, marking the next phase in the building’s ongoing transformation. Our relationship with this important organization has grown over time, and we are currently undertaking a feasibility study for the building as a whole, exploring its long-term potential as a resilient, inclusive community resource. Nik, Monica Hutton Photography: JamesMorley of&nbsp;DoubleSpace, Reza NikMedia: Azure / Dwell / AN Interior / Nuvo An extensive overhaul of a small century old townhouse, a curvy colorful home where to grow a family and to continue to hold space for community gatherings.&nbsp; “My house is me and I am it. My house is where I like to be and it looks like all my dreams,” (The Big Orange Splot, by Daniel Manus Pinkwater) Bright, bold, and colourful describes both the appearance of Pink House, as well as the personalities of the couple who own it. A facade of bright pink brick, contrasted with red and green framing, stands out in a line of row houses in the neighbourhood of Little Portugal, in Toronto, Canada. The home is the regular gathering spot for a group of friends, sharing meals, life, and a love of cinema by projecting movies on the back wall of the house on warm summer nights. As they set out to renovate, the owners knew they wanted a home that reflected the colour in their lives: who they are, how they live, and how they love to gather. Their choice of architect reflected this – SHEEEP, headed by Reza Nik, has a design ethos defined by playful and provocative uses of colour and graphics. Nik’s process is deeply co-creative, and he worked closely with the clients to not only to get a sense of their spatial needs, but also the deeper elements of their personalities that might be reflected in their home. Some of the first things shared between architect and client were movie posters for the 1958 Otto Preminger film Bounjour Tristesse, which were ultimately the inspiration for the bold palette. Entering from the front of Pink House, partition walls were replaced with low benches with integrated storage. Seating wraps around a picture window, towards a fireplace and firewood hutch – requested by the clients as a greener way to warm the home. The hutch, stained a vivid green, is anchored by warm wood tones and white tile. Curved walls and cabinetry pulls you deeper, from the living space into a dining room featuring a coat closet, built-ins, and a dog bed for Pretzel, a beloved golden retriever. A custom, pill-shaped kitchen island defines the kitchen space, with pops of colour drawing you into a bright breakfast nook. Colour, texture, and round forms makes the narrow space feel expansive and open. Every opportunity was made to bring in natural light: skylights were added to the kitchen, and a lightwell brightens the dining space. Finally, the back wall of the home plays off the front, echoing its bold colours but featuring them instead on individually painted shingles, arranged in a gingerbread house-like pattern. Collaborator and builder Renovations Ruth, after working with the clients and SHEEEP, gifted each a copy of the The Big Orange Splot, a children’s book about a man who joyfully refuses the uniformity of his neighbourhood by colourfully painting the exterior of his house, eventually inspiring his neighbours to follow suit. Grounds is a site of active, environmental learning that continues The Bentway’s creative work along the Gardiner Expressway. Opening September 2023, visitors are invited into a living laboratory for urban ecology, with experimental gardens that use rainwater run-off from the highway above to support the growth of flowering plant species. Bentway Staging Grounds is a temporary installation that unlocks an expanded public realm and programming opportunity for the CityPlace / Fort York neighbourhood. Transforming a vacant space below the Gardiner Expressway into a living laboratory, the project responds to the dynamic conditions of the site and educates visitors about urban ecology and stormwater management. Designed by Agency—Agency (New York City) and SHEEEP (Toronto), with engineering by Buro Happold, graphic design by Neil Donnelly Studio, and horticultural consulting by Brother Nature, Bentway Staging Grounds collects and leverages runoff water from the highway above to irrigate oversized planters in the space below. These planters support the growth of diverse, flowering native plant species such as Milkweed, Agastache and Yarrow, while passive water filtration and retention helps to reduce the risk of local flooding. Located at the intersection of Dan Leckie Way and Lake Shore Boulevard, the design for Bentway Staging Grounds introduces a network of ramps and elevated walkways that allow visitors to travel deep into the space as an extension of Canoe Landing Park to the north. These new pathways continue The Bentway’s ongoing efforts to transform the Expressway into a better connector for pedestrians and cyclists, celebrating their procession to surrounding waterfront parks and trail systems. Bentway Staging Grounds is a new type of public infrastructure that blends art and education, public space and experimentation, repositioning the Gardiner as a site of environmental regeneration. We helped the gallery in securing funding for the work.&nbsp; The concept was simple, treating the ground floor (gallery space) as the white cube and the basement as a colorful alternate world which will not be generally open to the public but accessable for openings, by the artists and gallery staff. of Architecture in 2025 - we teamed up with friends and colleages to form the “Mixtape Collective”. Our ideas were grounded on some of the work we have already been doing for the past 5 years. A brief introduction below:&nbsp; Hear Me Out invites Canadians and exhibition visitors alike to explore the sounds of care, resistance, and joy related to placemaking. Through acts of listening, the exhibition shares stories from underrepresented communities in Canada who have carved out spaces within their cities to find place, and sculpts the pavilion with sound to reimagine our sense of belonging through active and passive listening. As the Mixtape Collective, our team is dedicated to curating spaces that resonate with the vibrancy of diverse cultural expressions, particularly those of BIPOC communities.
