Invi(n)sible Cities (2018)
Expo for Design, Innovation & Technology (EDIT)
Design Exchange

Sound collaborator: Alex Young
Photography: Alex Wilms

Invi[n]sible Cities is a site-specific installation exploring the false dichotomy in relation to Toronto’s housing conversations. This dichotomy places the real-estate and luxury housing market on one side, as underserved communities and the general need for more affordable housing remain on the other.

The endurance of this false dichotomy often legitimizes an unrestrained push for lavish single family dwellings, and creates a sense of futility in the process of designing for social good. This is partially a failure of those in the design profession, along with municipalities, the institutions educating future practitioners and the many others involved in building our cities.

In order to begin to address the tensions and divisions in housing, these two seemingly separate conversations must converge.

Invi[n]sible Cities aims to complicate reductionist perspectives on issues around housing. It invites artists, designers, architects and city-builders to think beyond a polarizing discussion and ultimately challenges us to push for more equity within our city.

Closed-off by two 12’ black walls, the ovoid 8’-tall sculpture hangs atop a large opening in the floor of the derelict factory featuring two short films with sound design by Alex Young.
